Olympic Champion
January 2023

In 2023, Daniel kicked off the year by securing the top spot in the World SC rankings for the 800m Freestyle and finishing 4th in the 1500m Freestyle for 2022. Since the Tokyo Olympic Games, Daniel has been engaging with schools through video conferences and in-person visits, offering students the opportunity to meet a real-life Olympian and learn about the demands of elite sports. In December, Daniel and his brother Nathan (Wiffen Twins) conducted a Stroke Clinic at Enniskillen Lakelanders, where their older brother Ben is head coach.

Daniel represented Ireland at the Luxembourg meet and beat Romanchuk to claim the gold medal in the 2nd fastest time of the year for the 800m freestyle. Daniel also won the gold medal for the 400m freestyle securing his world ranking of #12 for this event in 2023.
February 2023

Daniel decided he would not compete in his usual routine this year, forgoing the Mare Nostrum series to compete in the AP International in London.

Competing in BUCS for Loughborough University, Daniel set a new BUCs record for th 1500m freestyle and was named swimmer of the meet.
March 2023

After a heavy weekend of racing at the Edinburgh International meet where he secured two first places and a second place, Daniel flew down to join other special guests to celebrate Commonwealth Day.
Only 1000 guests were invited to this prestigious event - a real honour for Daniel!
Seated only 4 rows behind King Charles, proudly wearing his Commonwealth silver medal, Daniel was treated to a cultural explosion of sound and celebration.
What a fantastic opportunity to represent Northern Ireland and swimming at this prestigious event.

Daniel's European record was also confirmed this month. This was the first time anyone from Ireland has held a European record in swimming.
April 2023

At the Stockholm Open, Daniel treated the crown to two excellent swims in which he set a new Irish record for the 400m freestyle at 3:44.35, which was the 2nd fastest 400m freestyle in the world this season and the 1500m freestyle with a time of 14:34.91, the fastest in the the world this year, and the 4th fastest ever in this event.
